Background of the Study
Water is a fundamental resource for human health, and its scarcity has far-reaching consequences on sanitation practices, particularly in regions where climate change is exacerbating droughts and reducing the availability of clean water. Bauchi State, located in northeastern Nigeria, has been grappling with water scarcity, which has been intensified by the impacts of climate change, including irregular rainfall and prolonged dry seasons. As water resources become increasingly scarce, the ability of communities to maintain adequate sanitation practices is significantly hindered, leading to public health risks such as waterborne diseases (Okeke et al., 2023).
Sanitation practices, such as proper waste disposal, hygiene maintenance, and access to clean water for domestic use, are critical to preventing diseases and improving overall public health. However, water scarcity forces communities to rely on unsafe water sources, which increases the risk of contamination and the spread of diseases like cholera and dysentery. This study aims to examine the effect of water scarcity caused by climate change on sanitation practices in Bauchi State and explore the public health implications of these changes.
Statement of the Problem
Bauchi State faces significant challenges related to water scarcity, which have been exacerbated by climate change. As water becomes scarcer, communities are increasingly unable to maintain basic sanitation practices, leading to a heightened risk of waterborne diseases. Despite the growing concerns, there is limited research that specifically addresses the relationship between water scarcity and sanitation practices in the context of climate change. This study will investigate how water scarcity affects sanitation and public health outcomes in Bauchi State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of water scarcity on sanitation practices in Bauchi State.
2. To examine the relationship between water scarcity and the prevalence of waterborne diseases in the state.
3. To provide recommendations for improving sanitation practices in the face of water scarcity.
Research Questions
1. How has water scarcity, exacerbated by climate change, affected sanitation practices in Bauchi State?
2. What is the relationship between water scarcity and the prevalence of waterborne diseases in Bauchi State?
3. What measures can be implemented to improve sanitation in Bauchi State amidst water scarcity?
Research Hypotheses
1. Water scarcity in Bauchi State has significantly hindered the effectiveness of sanitation practices.
2. There is a positive correlation between water scarcity and the prevalence of waterborne diseases in Bauchi State.
3. Interventions aimed at improving water access will reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases in Bauchi State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the effects of water scarcity on sanitation practices in Bauchi State, particularly in rural areas. It will examine how water scarcity impacts access to clean water for sanitation purposes and the resulting public health implications. Limitations include difficulties in accessing data on water availability and sanitation practices in remote areas, as well as the potential influence of other factors such as socio-economic conditions.
Definition of Terms
• Water Scarcity: The insufficient availability of water resources to meet the demands of a population, often exacerbated by climate change.
• Sanitation Practices: Actions related to the disposal of waste, maintaining hygiene, and ensuring access to clean water to prevent disease.
• Waterborne Diseases: Illnesses that are transmitted through contaminated water, such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid.
